Alright, let’s talk about fishin’ in Saginaw Bay, Michigan. I ain’t no fancy writer, so I’m just gonna tell it to ya straight, like I’d tell my neighbor over the fence.
Fishin’ Spots in Saginaw Bay
First off, folks keep talkin’ about this Dredge Island place. Sounds like a good spot, near where the Saginaw River dumps into the bay. They say the walleye hang out there after they’re done layin’ their eggs. Somethin’ about rocks and little fish for them walleye to eat. Early mornin’ and evenin’ are supposed to be good times to go. You know, when the sun ain’t beatin’ down on ya.
Now, if you’re after perch, seems like they’re catchin’ some near them buoys, numbers 1 and 2, in water that’s about 30 feet deep. That’s what I heard, anyway. Spoils Island, on the east side, that’s another place they’re talkin’ about. But some folks sayin’ the perch fishin’ there ain’t been so good lately, so maybe check around before ya head out that way.
And then there’s this Sparkplug spot. Heard tell they’re catchin’ perch there too, in about 23 feet of water. Using them perch rigs, ya know, the ones with the little hooks and beads. Most of them perch are just seven to ten inches, nothin’ too big, but good enough for a fish fry, I reckon.
What Kind of Fish You Gonna Catch?
- Walleye: Like I said, Dredge Island’s the place for them, especially after they’re done spawnin’. They seem to like them rocks and little baitfish.
- Yellow Perch: You can find these fellers near the buoys, Spoils Island (sometimes), and the Sparkplug. They ain’t huge, but they taste mighty fine fried up.
- Salmon: Now, for salmon, you gotta head over to the Pere Marquette or the Big Manistee River. Best time is late summer and fall, August to November. Muskegon River gets ‘em later on.
- Other Stuff: Folks catch bass and panfish too, but I ain’t heard much about ‘em lately. Mostly walleye and perch this time of year.
When’s the Best Time to Go Fishin’?
Well, for walleye, early mornin’ or dusk is good. Salmon, you want to go in the fall, August to November time. Perch? Seems like they bite whenever they feel like it, but folks are catchin’ ‘em now, so I guess it’s a good time to go. Always a good idea to check the weather before you head out though. Don’t want to get caught in a storm.

Now, I ain’t got no fancy phone or computer, but my grandkid showed me this thing called the internet. Says there are places online where folks post about their fishin’ trips. They got pictures and everything. There’s this “Rock N’ Reel 2.0” somethin’ or other, sounds like they go fishin’ in Saginaw Bay a lot. And places where you can ask questions and see what other folks are catchin’. Handy if you wanna know what’s bitin’ before you waste your time. Some places even give you weekly updates, tellin’ you where the fish are and what they’re bitin’ on. That way, you don’t gotta go guessin’.
My Advice? Just Get Out There and Fish!
Look, fishin’ ain’t an exact science. Sometimes they bite, sometimes they don’t. That’s just the way it is. The best thing to do is just get yourself out there, try different spots, different baits, and see what works. And don’t forget to bring some snacks and somethin’ to drink.
