Well, let me tell ya about fishin’ at Rend Lake in Illinois. Folks say it’s a good place to catch some fish, and I reckon they ain’t lyin’. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, mind you, just an old woman who likes to throw a line in the water now and then.
What kinda fish you can catch? Well, they say there’s all sorts. I heard tell of them big ol’ largemouth bass, and some folks like to go after the crappie. Them crappie, they’re good eatin’. And then there’s white bass too. Plenty of them, they say. Oh, and the catfish! Big ones and little ones, channel and flathead, they got ‘em all. I even heard of some folks catchin’ bluegill and them funny lookin’ freshwater drum, and even them carp, though I ain’t never much cared for them.
Now, where to go fishin’ at Rend Lake? That’s a big lake, ya know. But folks talk about Sandusky Bay bein’ a good spot. Said you can catch bluegill, bullhead, crappie and largemouth bass there. There’s this place called Jackie Branch, north of that Route 154. They even got a little boat ramp there, if’n you got a boat. Me, I just fish from the shore mostly. Don’t need no fancy boat.
Them fish, they ain’t all giants, ya know. Most of ‘em, they’re about this long, maybe 10 to 15 inches. And they weigh maybe half a pound to a pound and a half. But that’s big enough for me. And they got rules, ya know. You can only keep 20 fish a day, and only three of ‘em can be bigger than 17 inches. Don’t wanna go catchin’ all the little ones, gotta leave some for seed.
I ain’t too good with all that technical stuff, but I heard tell you can find all sorts of information online these days. Folks postin’ fishin’ reports all the time. Tellin’ ya what’s bitin’ and where. They even got websites that tell ya the weather and all that. Stuff I don’t understand, but sounds fancy.
- They say you gotta use different ways to catch different fish, different techniques they call ‘em. I just use a worm and a hook, mostly. But some folks, they use all sorts of fancy lures and things.
- And they talk about the size of the lake and how deep it is, but I just look for a spot that looks fishy, you know? Where the water’s calm and there’s some weeds or somethin’.
Folks are always lookin’ for the “best fishing spots.” I reckon any spot where the fish are bitin’ is a good spot. And Rend Lake, well, it seems to have a lot of good spots. They say it’s one of the best lakes in Illinois for largemouth, crappie and white bass. And like I said, them catfish are somethin’ else.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a place to go fishin’ in Illinois, you might want to give Rend Lake a try. It’s a purdy place, and there’s plenty of fish to be caught, or so they say. Just remember to be respectful of the lake and the fish. And don’t forget your worm and your hook! And maybe check them fishin’ reports if you’re fancy like that. Me, I just go when I feel like it and hope for the best. That’s the best way to fish, if you ask me.
Anyways, that’s about all I know about fishin’ at Rend Lake. Hope it helps ya some. Good luck, and tight lines, as they say.
