Alright, let’s talk about fishing in Steinhatchee, FL. I ain’t no fancy fisherman, just telling you what I know, you hear?
Fishin’ in Steinhatchee, it’s somethin’ else. Folks ’round here, they catch all sorts. Redfish, trout, them Spanish Mackerel, even scallops when the time’s right. You gotta know where to go, though. Ain’t no use just throwin’ your line anywhere.
Them fellas over at TJ’s Charters, they know their stuff. They got the reports, tell you what’s bitin’ and where. You wanna catch somethin’ good, you listen to them. Or Rocky Creek Charters, they good too. Take you out on the water, show you the ropes. They’ll get you on them redfish and scallops, that’s for sure.
- Redfish, you can catch ’em pretty much all year round. They like them shallow waters, near the grass. Topwater plugs, they work good, or even live bait like shrimp.
- Trout, they’re around too, all year long. Same kinda spots as the redfish.
- Spanish Mackerel, now them’s a different story. They come and go. You gotta find the bait fish, that’s where they’ll be. Out near the Steinhatchee Reef, that’s a good spot. They say Nine Mile Bank is good too, lots of ‘em there, I hear.
- Scallops, them’s a summer thing. July through September, that’s when you go. Water gotta be clear, though. After that Debby storm, they said the scallops were still good, but the water was a bit cloudy. Now the kids are back in school so it’s not so crowded, and that makes it a good time to go, less people to bother ya.
Now, if you got a boat, you’re in luck. Steinhatchee River, it takes you right out to the good fishin’ spots. Ain’t gotta go far. Shoreline from Rock Point all the way down to Dallus Creek, that’s good for redfish. You can see ‘em, sight fishin’ they call it. Cow Creek entrance, that’s another good spot. Plenty of places to try your luck.
Them reefs, that’s where the big fish are. Ten miles out, somethin’ like that. Snappers, groupers, sheepshead…all kinds of tasty fish. You need a good boat for that, though. And some strong arms, them groupers, they put up a fight, I tell ya.
Fishin’ season, it matters. Some fish, you can catch ‘em anytime. Redfish, trout, like I said. But kingfish, tarpon, them’s summer fish. Scallops too, gotta wait for the right time.
You don’t need fancy gear, neither. Shrimp, pinfish, that’s good bait. Or them artificial lures, plugs, spoons, jigs…they work too. Just gotta know how to use ‘em. And you gotta be patient. Fishin’ ain’t always easy. Sometimes you catch a bunch, sometimes you don’t catch nothin’ at all. That’s just the way it is.
So, if you’re thinkin’ ‘bout fishin’ in Steinhatchee, go ahead. It’s a good place. Plenty of fish, pretty scenery. Just remember what I told ya. Find the right spot, use the right bait, and be patient. You do that, you might just catch yourself a mess of fish.

Weather’s important too. You don’t wanna be out there when it’s stormin’. They say the best days are when it’s ’bout 72 degrees, not too hot, not too cold. But even if it’s a bit chilly, like 42 degrees, you can still catch fish. Just gotta dress warm.
